If you are a business analyst and curious how business architecture and business analysis are interrelated, this article walks you through the alignment of business architecture with requirements, process, and case management practices based on a real-life scenario.
One value of business architecture is to create a line of sight into the complexities of a business ecosystem to better understand how a business works as a whole. This in turn helps understanding the root-cause of business problems, which in turn helps finding long-lasting solutions to those problems. This article describes what a business ecosystem is and how business architecture builds and maintains a business ecosystem. You will also find a link to an interactive metamodel of the business ecosystem, which gives you an idea how we slice and dice a business into different domains and define the relationship among them.
If you are curious to learn about the business architecture practice and its value, this article provides a practical perspective into building and maturing a business architecture practice while delivering business value.
Ever wonder how it feels to do the ground work as a business architecture practitioner and a strategic advisor? This is a real-life use case of business architecture and how it addressed the business challenge at hand using two of the core domains of business architecture, namely value streams and business capabilities.
Analogies are powerful way of explaining complex concepts. You might have heard about business capabilities and value streams and wonder what they are. This Lego® Story provides a simple view of these domains and how we use them to enable transformations, execution of strategies, and innovation across a business.
If you are interested about books related to business architecture discipline, you can find a selection here with a short summary of each book.
2. Formal Training & Certification
At this stage you are ready to dive in and get educated on the foundational knowledge of business architecture, learning deeper about topics such as:
-
the core and extended domains of business architecture,
-
the role of the business architect and the business architecture practice,
-
how business architecture aligns with other business and IT related disciplines, and
-
the role of business architecture in enabling the execution of business strategies.
You might also consider pursuing your CBA® designation if you would like to be recognized as a Certified Business Architect®.
ā
If you find yourself at this stage, we have two programs (Foundation and Applied) that provide you with a detailed understanding and formal education on all of these fundamental topics, covering the entire BIZBOK® Guide (A Guide to the Business Architecture Body of Knowledge®). Both of these programs also provide you with all the knowledge and the tools that you need to become a Certified Business Architect (CBA)®.
ā
If you are a self-learner and would like to get started right away, our Business Architecture Foundation Program is a perfect choice for you. It includes a self-paced on-demand course with over 150 video lessons, curated library of resources, simulated CBA® practice exams, and one hour of mentoring to support you through the education part of your journey.
ā
If you prefer an interactive and group learning experience, our Business Architecture Applied Program is the right choice for you. This program includes 20 hours of virtual instructor-led bootcamp running 3 to 4 times a year. If you are a team of 4 or more, you can have a private training for the Applied program and at your preferred date and time.
Similar to the Foundation program, the Applied program also includes a set of curated resources, simulated CBA® practice exams, and one hour of mentoring. This program also covers real-life examples and scenarios, including a full case study walkthrough, which supports you through the application part of your journey during stage 3 below.
ā
Finally, if you are only interested in achieving your CBA® designation without going through our training programs, we offer our CBA® practice exams as a standalone tool that you can leverage to prepare and gauge your readiness for the official CBA® exam.
3. Practical Application & Role Immersion
At this stage you have fully gained the foundational knowledge of the BIZBOK® Guide and the business architecture discipline and are ready to put your knowledge into practice.
This stage is all about the art of applying business architecture in real-world scenarios. The tools and the techniques that you learn in stage 2 are just that, a set of tools and techniques.
When it comes to the application of those tools and techniques, every scenario is unique and it demands your professional judgement of how to apply business architecture in each scenario. That professional judgement takes years of practice and experience. You can accelerate that process by leveraging our Mentoring and Coaching to get behind the scene support and guidance while leading your work.
ā
āYou can also rely on our mentoring and coaching to ensure that you succeed in your first 90 days as a business architect. That's a critical time when you build the trust and creditability in your organization and across different engagements.
ā
As mentioned in stage 2, the real-life examples and scenarios that we walk through during the Applied program bootcamp also provide you with great insight into how to apply business architecture in different scenarios.
Finally, if you have already enrolled into our Foundation program, you can sign up for the Real-life Scenarios Add-on during or after completion of your course. This add-on is a 4-hour instructor-led virtual session walking you through the same real-life examples and scenarios that we cover in the Applied program.āāā
4. Strategic Influence & Specialization
At this stage you are an expert in the business architecture field. You are a strategic advisor and an organizational change agent leading business transformations and execution of business strategies. You provide the right insights to the right people at the right time to influence decision-making at all levels of the organization.
ā
You might also decide to specialize in specific areas, such as mergers and acquisitions, new ventures and start-ups, or globalization efforts.
āā
With our Mentoring & Coaching on your side during this stage of your journey, you can rest assured that you have our years of hands-on experience and expertise to multiply your impact across your engagements and step into the final stage of your journey.
5. Excellence & Thought Leadership
Yes, as Plato says, Excellence is not a gift, but a skill that takes [years of] practice. With the wealth of expertise and experience that you have accumulated throughout your journey up to this stage, you have achieved excellence in business architecture and are a thought leader driving the evolution of the discipline.
Actively participating in the Business Architecture Guild's collaborative teams to build and refine industry reference models and contribute to the next versions of the BIZBOK® Guide is a great way to connect to and give back to the amazing community of business architecture practitioners from almost every corner of the globe.
ā
You can also mentor aspiring business architects and other professionals and support them in their own business architecture journeys towards excellence.
All our programs are up-to-date based on the latest version of the BIZBOK® Guide v14.0, released in March 2025.
